International day of university sport: Celebrating five days before FISU Sailing comes to Split
News 20 September 2026
Every year on 20 September, universities, national federations, and student-athletes around the world come together to celebrate the International Day of University Sport (IDUS). Established in 2016 by FISU and UNESCO, IDUS promotes physical activity, healthy lifestyles, and the vital role of university sport in building stronger, more connected communities.
This year’s celebration carries special significance for the sailing community: in just five days, Split, Croatia, will host the FISU Sailing event, bringing together student-athletes from across the globe for a celebration of competition, friendship, and university sport values.
IDUS is more than a single day — it is a platform for dialogue on the future of university sport, encouraging universities and student organizations to exchange best practices and reaffirm FISU’s core values: excellence, friendship, and respect. As Split prepares to welcome the international sailing community, this year’s IDUS serves as a fitting prelude to the action on the water.
On this IDUS, we extend our thanks and congratulations to all student-athletes, coaches, team leaders, sports staff, volunteers, and media who make university sport possible — and we look forward to celebrating together in Split in just a few days.
